Bathroom Remodel

We have an itty-bitty half bathroom in our master bedroom, about the size of a closet. We've hated it since we moved in and finally decided to remodel it for our anniversary at the end of June...because we're romantic like that :).

The bathroom was carpeted when we moved in, but the first time the toilet overflowed, we ripped it out to find ugly, nasty linoleum underneath. The vanity was old and had chunks missing at the bottom. The toilet made an obnoxious noise forever after being flushed. While my dad was visiting, we started thinking about it and he said it would be a one-day project, so we decided while the boys were gone, that we would do it!

Little did we know that it would take several days and a million trips to Home Depot! Dale was still working and I had Lily during the days so we were limited to when she was sleeping or both of us were home. We spent a day ripping everything out...

When we took off the white panelling, we found out that there was gross black glue everywhere so we mudded the walls. We then had to wait for the mud to dry, plus the next day was Sunday. That Monday I sanded the walls (and didn't realize that by leaving the bathroom door open that our entire bedroom would be covered in white dust...whoops!).
Covered in saw dust!

When we pulled up the linoleum, the particle board under just crumbled in our fingers so we pulled that up as well. Under that was another layer of linoleum which crumbled. Under that was another particle board....which crumbled! There was so much water damage that we had to go down to the wood joists (or whatever they're called). Plus, the window stool, baseboards and door frame were so old and damaged when we removed them that we had to replace those as well. I got to learn how to use a mitre saw and put those in while Dale was working :).

We painted, then put in the new toilet, vanity, mirror, blinds, outlet, light switch, toilet paper holder and towel holder. Youtube tutorials were our friends to learn all sorts of new skills. Then we caulked, and painted some more!

All in all, we love the new bathroom! It was way more time, work and money than we expected (which is apparently a common problem with renovations), but we learned a lot, got a bunch more tools, and get to enjoy the fruits of our labors daily :).
PS It's very hard to photograph a bathroom this small and now you know more than you ever wanted to know about our bathroom :).
