At 1:10 AM on April 14th, I had just lied down in bed when I heard a faint "pop". For a second I thought my water had broken but decided that was too unlikely so I fell asleep. 10 minutes later, I woke up and ran into the bathroom where Dale was brushing his teeth and told him I thought my water had broken. He called the hospital and they said to come in and they would evaluate me. I started shaking because i realized that I could become a mother that day. We hadn't packed a bag to take to the hospital because we were planning to do that as well as multiple other preparations that day, so we ran around trying to find everything I might need.
| About to have a baby! |
We arrived at the hospital at about 2:00 AM and they set me up in a labor and delivery "suite". Because my water had broken and I tested high for a type of bacteria that might harm the baby, they put me on pitocin to induce labor.
On Thursday the 12th i had dilated to 2 cms and when they checked on Saturday I was at 3 cms. By the time we had left our apartment to go to the hospital I was feeling menstrual cramp-like contractions.
Well, the pitocin was highly effective because an hour after I had reached 3 cms, I was at 5 cms. All of the medical staff were pretty surprised that I was progressing so quickly, especially since this was my first pregnancy. At this point, I asked for an epidural which made a world of difference! I was finally able to sleep (Dale had been sleeping for quite a while by this point).
Shortly later, they had me roll onto my right side because Kimball's heart rate was dropping and they put me on oxygen.
At about 7:45 AM the doctor said it was time to push, so the nurse (Marilyn) told me what to do, & Dale and the med student helped me each time I had to push. Soon, Dale was able to seen the very tip of Kimball's head and informed me that Kimball had dark brown hair. I had to get an episiotomy because i couldn't stretch anymore.
When I heard Kimball start to cry, I started crying and laughing. It felt so amazing to know I had brought this little life into the world and to know he was ok. I couldn't stop staring at Kimball. He looked so incredible despite the white cream cheesy stuff all over him and his poor cone head.
Kimball weighed 7 lb, 1 oz, and measured 19 inches long. He had a full head of dark brown hair and the most captivating eyes - just dark, dark blue.
I'm so grateful to have Kimball here. It feels like he's always been with us. I feel like I have a greater understanding of the Atonement because of Kimball. All of the pain and discomfort during pregnancy and labor were totally worth it to have Kimball in our lives and I would gladly do it again. Caring for him is one of the most enriching experiences I have ever had!
